DescriptionGroup portrait of the Eastern Star Meeting, fifteen members. They are all wearing dresses, with very large bows in their hair.
A meeting of Tempe Chapter No. 18, Order of the Eastern Star (O.E.S.). No details regarding the women in this photo, nor the specific occasion for this meeting, are known. It appears that this particular meeting was held in a private home, address unknown.
The O.E.S. is a branch of the Masons fraternal order, and Eastern Star members are mostly women, and generally relatives of men who are Masons. The exact year that Tempe's Chapter No. 18 of the Order of the Eastern Star was established is not known at this time, although newspaper records indicate that Tempe's chapter was holding regular meetings by 1915. Regular meetings of the Eastern Star were held in Tempe's Masonic Hall (in one of the commercial buildings downtown, and possibly in the second story hall of the old Baber-Jones grocery at the northeast corner of Mill Avenue and 6th Street). From a 1915 meeting notice in the Arizona Republican newspaper, Odd Fellow's Hall – aka the Tempe Hardware Building – was used as an early meeting hall as well for the O.E.S.
