DescriptionPhoto shows the damaged Phoenix & Eastern Railroad bridge in the aftermath of the 1905 flood that swept away the two northern-most spans of this five-span bridge as well as the concrete support pier that was positioned between the two missing spans. The bridge's long northern trestle can be seen in the center-left area of the photo. (No remnants of the portions of the bridge structure that were swept away are visible.)

A substantial amount of water is visible in the Salt River, but it appears to be well below flood stage.

The Hayden Butte occupies the upper right-hand portion of this photo.

The headgate of the Grand Canal occupies the left lower half of this photo. The structure appears to be very well-built of masonry and heavy-duty lumber (and probably iron and/or steel parts). Occupying the lower center portion of the image is what appears to be a berm of dirt, brush, rock, and miscellaneous debris to channel the water of the canal. The presence of men in the area of the headgate's intake structure and the absence of flowing water in the canal suggests that these men are repairing or perhaps even assessing damage to the headgate structure.
