DescriptionSalt River flooding at the Santa Fe Railroad Bridge, also known as the Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railroad.
A duplicate of this image is 1987.1.2942.
The bridge was built by the Phoenix & Eastern Railroad, which was bought out by the Santa Fe Railroad and so became a subsidiary railroad line to Santa Fe. In local parlance, this bridge was generally known as the Santa Fe Bridge. The bridge was heavily damaged in 1905 by a massive flood that washed away the northern two spans of the 5-span bridge – it was never repaired. Around 1926, the remaining spans and concrete piers of the bridge were demolished and removed.
The Phoenix & Eastern Railroad provided service between Phoenix and Winkelman after it was completed in 1904. After the 1905 flood, the railroad made an agreement with the local Southern Pacific Railroad subsidiary line to use the old Maricopa & Phoenix Bridge to the west, also known as the Southern Pacific Bridge in later years.
