DescriptionEdwin Thew's Clothing and General Merchandise Store (New York Store) on Mill Ave in Tempe, Arizona with employees in front at the turn of the century. It occupied the first floor of the Petersen Building on the east side of the street. From left: J. E. McClain, Miss Jones (clerk), Edwin Thew (owner). A duplicate of this image is 1987.1.454.

The clerk - here named as "Miss Jones" - is probably Mrs. Alcaria Montano Jones, widow of Dr. Wilson Walker Jones (deceased 1896).

Edwin L. Thew established the New York Cash Store in the Petersen Building on Mill Avenue (between 4th and 5th Street) in 1898. Thew, at right, pauses for a photo with sales clerk Alcaria Jones and rancher J. E. McClain. Ms. Jones also served her community as a midwife for many years and she was among Tempe’s earliest pioneers.

The sidewalk that they stand on was built for Niels Petersen’s building in 1898. Tempe’s business owners took the lead to build the town’s first concrete sidewalks.
