DescriptionFrom an article published by Tempe Daily News, Thursday, March 31, 1977:

Checkerboard In Cement -

There'll be a checkerboard square effect when crews complete work on the Superstition Freeway "canal underpass," east of Price, in work extending the freeway from Tempe to Mesa. Cement squares (above) will be alternated with heavy aggregate (cement with small stones) squares, to be poured later in unfilled checkerboard areas, for a decorative design. That long "box" across top of underpass is where the re-routed Tempe Canal now flows - above the freeway. Vehicle shown in photo is on an access road along the canal in temporary use while construction is underway.
The film negative of this photograph is housed in box 2G7-B.
