DescriptionOn back of photo: "Bertrande Hendrix b. Sept 25th, 1890, died June 12th, 1918 at age 28. Nursed people sick with flu in epidemic of 1918 and she got it and died. So sad!"

The photo was taken of Bertrande Hendrix soon before she died. She has short, curly hair and is wearing light colored, high necked dress with a wide collar.

Caption from the Tempe 150th Anniversary exhibit:
One of the nursing volunteers who served our community during the Great Influenza pandemic that began in 1918 was Bertrande Hendrix. Beloved in Tempe where she was known as “Bertie,” the young music teacher and active church member succumbed to the influenza herself in June 1919.
