Came to Arizona at in 1878.
After the Civil War, he moved from Missouri to Texas, and then to El Monte, California. In 1878 he brought several hundred head of cattle into Arizona and established a ranch on the Verde river above Fort McDowell under the JM brand. In order to finance his cattle operations he freighted goods for several years, often making trips to California and to El Paso, Texas. He homesteaded 80 acres along what would become North Central Avenue in Phoenix. The cattle business prospered for Sears, and about 1880 he built one of the first frame mansions in Phoenix near the corner of Indian School Road and 7th Street. In 1930, -'31, -'32 lived at 935 Farmer Ave. About 1907 he turned his ranches and several thousand cattle over to his sons, Perry and George.
