Mr. Hutson has been directly involved in the Tempe community for more than 40 years. He has served on more than 20 community boards, civic clubs and charitable organizations. Some of these include the Tempe Chamber of Commerce, Finance Administration and Inter-Government Relations Committee (National League of Cities), ASU Institutional Biosafety Committee, Tempe American Legion, East Valley Boys & Girls Club, Tempe Sister Cities and the Sun Devil Club. He has served on the Board of Adjustment and Industrial Development Authority for the City of Tempe . He is a lifetime member of Jaycees International, United States Jaycees, the Tempe Jaycees and the Tempe Elks. He is also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners and several police officer associations. Mr. Hutson has received numerous awards for his community service including three “Outstanding Young Men of Arizona” awards and four "Tempe Citizen of the Year" awards.
Mr. Hutson has overseen nine different Tempe bond election committees between 1970 and 2002. His efforts helped secure more than $1 billion in bonds, a permanent base adjustment and a sales tax increase for police, fire and infrastructure.
He has recently retired as warden from the Arizona Department of Corrections, with 18 years of service. Presently, he is a professional investor and venture manager. He currently serves on the board of directors of several private companies and one public company. As a professional investor, he has had direct responsibility and management of more than 100 million dollars of assets in the real estate, oil and gas industries.
