From the caption in Tempe Daily News for the cropped photograph:

It only looked as though actor Danny Kaye (left) was going to pitch plaques instead of a baseball to launch the Seattle Mariners on their spring training exhibition game schedule of Tempe Stadium yesterday. Kaye is holding handful of plaques presented by E.B. Smith (right) of Baseball Facilities, Inc., "In appreciation" to Kaye and other individual members of the Mariners' owner group for bringing major league spring training baseball back to Tempe.
