DescriptionLarge and colorful quilt. A pattern of layered rows and columns in different colors and hues creates the effect of dimension within the quilt. The center of the quilt has dark gray coloring behind strips of white and light blue, then as the gray tapers out of the center it lightens into other colors and becomes yellow at the edges and corners. Integrated into this larger effect are many multi-colored patterns and sections. Per the artist, "Overlay 7 is one of a series of grid based quilts in which I have explored one of the common themes in my work, the illusion of three dimensions in a two dimensional work."
Garrison also expressed interest in contrasting "the rigidity of the grid and the controlled value gradation of the background with the playful unpredictability of irregular strip piecing."
