DescriptionPosthumously awarded U.S. military Purple Heart medal of Radarman 3rd Class Bill Hugh Tosh (U.S. Navy) who perished as a result of the sinking of the cruiser U.S.S. Indianapolis on or shortly after July 30, 1945. (The ship was sunk by torpedoes fired by Japanese submarine I-58.)

The medal is still in its original leather-bound case as issued.

The reverse side of the medal is marked "FOR MILITARY MERIT" and below that mark is hand engraved the following:
