DescriptionThis file consists of several letters from Ernie Nickels urging financial and political support for the Tempe Rehabilitation project, as well as their letters in return. One notable letter was from Carl Hayden who said, "at the age of 92, I want to remember Tempe as I have known it for a life time." There were other letters from Howard Pyle, Stewar Udall, Heinz Fenichel, James Richardson, Robert Finch, and R.J. Wittwer, most of whom supported his efforts. A majority of the letters were written in 1970, however, the final letter was written in 1999, from Jeanette Nickels to a journalist, explaining Ernie Nickel's impactful contribution to the present, award winning condition of Mill Avenue. She explains that he was a the forefront of the crusade to rehabilitate Mill Avenue.
