DescriptionTextile/fiber collage of detail images. Rising up throughout the frame are spines and forms of agave plants twisting together. At the top of the fiber collage are the tops of vehicles and tall trees in the background. The piece is inspired by the plants chosen for public landscaping, which often have difficulty surviving, particularly those chosen for areas near parking lots.
Shinn focuses on landscapes touched by humans such as highway scenes, old rusted vehicles and hints of architecture in plant life. She achieves her realism by taking her own photo snapshots, scanning them and heat transferring them to canvas. It’s the digitized photo that gives her a map to follow. She says that embroidery has “preciousness” into which people are drawn.
