DescriptionJudgment Document from the Superior Court of the State of Arizona, regarding No. 21617, Romo vs. Laird. This case involved the parents, Adolpho "Bebe" Romo and Joaquina Jones, suing William E. Laird, J.H. Daniels, and I.F. Waterhouse, as members of the Board of Trustees of the Tempe School District No.3, and G.W. Persons Superintendant of Tempe School District No.3. The cause to sue was that as a Mexican American in Tempe, Romo's four children were segregated at the Eighth Street School designated for "Mexican American" and "Spanish American" children, rather than allowing them admittance to the Tenth Street School, designated for "children of the white race". However, the Eighth Street School did not employ state certified teachers which affected education quality, and thus the case focused on the "separate but equal" principle. On October 5th, 1925, Judge Joseph S. Jenckes of the Maricopa County Superior Court ruled in their favor, and their four children were allowed to attend the Tenth Street School.
The document itself is two pages, typewritten in black ink, and is attached to a plain blue backing paper. The paper is rather fragile with creasing, some small areas of loss/tears, and some mild staining.
