Lived in Malibu, California, but after becoming ill with scarlet fever, her father sent her to live with an uncle and aunt in Tempe. Attended Tempe Training School.
Worked for Hearst Newspapers. Covered the White House when Franklin Roosevelt was in office. Wrote the famous "Checkers" speech for President Richard Nixon.
