BiographyASU Football Coach, 1958-1985.
Graduated from Windber High School in 1948. Attended Washington & Lee University, and then Michigan State University, both on athletic scholarships. Spent two years as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army infantry at Ft. Benning, Georgia.
Served as Arizona State College assistant football coach in the late 1950s, under head coach Dan Devine. He became head football coach in 1958. Under his leadership, the ASU Sun Devils became a nationally prominent football team, ranked number two nationally in 1975. He was involved in the creation of the Western Athletic Conference in 1962, and was primarily responsible for bringing ASU into the PAC-10 Conference in 1978.
He was involved in promoting public support for changing the name of the college to Arizona State University in 1958.
Received a master's degree from ASU.
He was fired in 1985 due to controversies over student athletes receiving fraudulent college credits, and an incident in which he allegedly hit an ASU team member.
