BiographyHe crossed the plains from Iowa to California in 1860, and came to Arizona as a member of the California Volunteer Cavalry in 1865. He served in the U.S. Army under General George S. Crook in1865. During a campaign against the Apache Indians, he engaged in a battle near Superior, where many Apaches jumped from a cliff to their death rather than surrender, at a site now
known as "Apache Leap." He got involved in mining and ranching in Arizona, and was "Shot Gun
Messenger" on the stage from Prescott to Yuma for two years, when he was known as "John Behind the Trigger." He moved to Chico, California, c1900.
