BiographyWas one of the Mexican soldiers stationed at the Tucson presidio in 1855 when the U.S. Army took possession of the Gasden Purchase territory. He settled in Adamsville, but lost his farm there when the Gila River Indian Reservation was expanded in 1871. He then moved to the Salt River Valley, on land located at the foot of the Salt River Mountains (South Mountain). He was one of the many farmers who helped build the San Francisco Canal. About 1874 he became mayordomo for Michael Wormser, managing his farming operations. In 1889, Sotelo's claims to 720 acres were filed with the Maricopa County Recorder at Wormser's request. Sotelodeeded this land to Wormser, received $2,000 for an additional 60 acres, and was able to keep 80 acres of his own farm.
