DescriptionHerd of ostriches on a farm south of Tempe.
Photo taken at or near the location of the Tempe Ostrich Company. The herd of ostriches in the photo is standing in an alfalfa field, with the view looking west toward the South Mountain range.
The Tempe Ostrich Company was originally located on the ranch of William S. Pickrell, which today is The Lakes subdivision in Tempe. Incorporated in 1905, the Tempe Ostrich Company owned the ranch site by 1911 (according to the 1911 Maricopa County Landownership Map for Township 1 South, Range 4 East). In terms of modern roadways, the the Ostrich Company ranch was located on the south side of Baseline Road, with a western boundary halfway between Rural Road and Lakeshore Drive, the southern boundary was Southshore Drive, and the east edge of the ranch was McClintock Road.

Caption from the Tempe 150th Anniversary exhibit:

Founded in 1905, the Tempe Ostrich Company’s ranch covered about 240 acres south of Baseline Road. The birds’ feathers were in demand until fashions changed in the 1910s.
