DescriptionA group of women and men stand for a photograph on the front steps of Tempe’s 1st Congregational Church, at the northeast corner of Forest Avenue and 8th Street (University Drive) sometime around 1960. Just over 30 people appear in the photo – All are dressed in their “Sunday best,” including hats and some accessories. Most of the people in the photo appear to be in their 50s or older in age range.

No information is available on the occasion for the photo, the identity of the group, or the individuals involved. The group may represent a women’s organization affiliated with the church, as women were a driving force in many Tempe churches, and each church likely hosted multiple women’s organizations (including inter-denominational groups affiliated with more than one church in Tempe).

Pictured in the photograph is the entrance to the 1st Congregational Church, which has a unique, pointed arch above the entrance. There is a sizeable open foyer area of the entryway, and to the right and left inside the foyer are two doors/entryways that lead to the north and east wings of this roughly T-shaped church building. This brick building was originally constructed in 1918.
