(see inscription for full text)
This sign commemorates the completion of the Papago Park Highway in 1936. It was a project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a New Deal program designed to create jobs and inject money into the U.S. economy during the Great Depression. The highway was built through the scenic southeastern section of Papago Park with the intention of providing a route between Tempe and Scottsdale. Today it is called Curry Road. The many bullet holes in the sign show that Papago Park was once a more rural area than it is today.
