Firemen (photo left, see 2001.19.2191) survey damage at west side of Parkway Apartments building on South Hardy, where an explosion believed to be caused by leaking gas line and an attempt to light a cigarette resulted in the death of one person, the critical injury of a child and an estimated $70,000 in damage to the building alone. In photo right, walls of a stairway well and the building lean in opposite directions after the blast which blew the railing from the stairway well straight through nearby apartment in the four-apartment complex.
