Focusing On Engineers - Tempe City Engineer Don Pierson, Jr., and Tempean Joe Wise (at back l and r), state coordinator of National Engineers Week being observed this week, watch Arizona State University civil engineering graduate student Mark Nathern (front) at work in hydraulic research in ASU's hydrodynamics laboratory. Nathern is involved in investigation of the effects of lard channel flows on bridge piers and above is measuring water surface elevations around a "pier" of specified dimensions as water is flowing. Study will give design engineers information they will need to construct bridges, economically, that will be safe during periods of flowing water. Hydraulics is one of many areas in which engineers, being saluted this week, must be knowledgeable, said Wise, assistant of Sverdrup and Parcel and Associates in Tempe.
