DescriptionAsk any dozen house plant addicts why the spider plant or Chlorophytum doesn't form runners with baby spider plants and you will get a dozen different answers. Some claim they must be potbound to form runners, but there are some very small plants in large pots which have sent out runners. Others claim they need another spider plant nearby for company. Still others say they need to be a certain age. All these theories have proven false. Researchers have found that when days are long the plants stop forming runners, especially when they're grown in bright sun. Even when days grow shorter, if the Chlorophytum gets and unusual amount of light in the late hours of the night it will stop forming runners. So try to grow your spider plant in a shaded situation, not only to encourage formation of "babies but to keep leaf tips from browning.
