The Arizona Guardsmen in this image wear the shoulder insignia of the 45th Infantry Division (to which the 158th was attached from the early 1920s to 1940). This insignia was used in the 1920s and into the 1930s. This insignia was a swastika set horizontally -- widely popularized in the early 20th century as a Native American symbol of Good Luck. Dropped as the Nazi Party in Germany preempted the symbol as a well-known image in the 1930s. The Thunderbird was adopted by the division as its distinctive shoulder insignia in 1939.
