Catalog number1987.1.2277
DescriptionYoung man -- Garland White -- in a military uniform that dates to 1910s or early 1920s. No collar insignia present. Uniform is the cotton type issued for warm weather use. Not known if Garland is serving in the US Army or in a National Guard unit (which could include the ASU/Normal School cadets, who were attached to the Arizona Guard).

Garland displays a variety of marksmanship proficiency medals. Many of these are marked to the National Rifle Association which sponsored numerous marksmanship competition matches in the late 19th and early 20th century for the US Army and National Guard units. The medal on the far left indicates that Garland qualified as an expert rifleman in the Army or Guard (this badge was created by the US Army and is not associated with the National Rifle Association).

Note -- this photo probably depicts Garland White as a member of the Arizona National Guard, which was federalized as the 158th Infantry Regiment in 1917 for WWI. Refer to photo Acc# 180 for a 1920s image of Garland and his teammates on the AZ Guard (158th Infy Regt) rifle team. They wear the insignia of the 45th Infantry Division (to which the 158th was attached from the early 1920s to 1940). This insignia was used in the 1920s and into the 1930s. This insignia was a swastika set horizontally -- widely popularized in the early 20th century as a Native American symbol of Good Luck. Dropped as the Nazi Party in Germany preempted the symbol as a well-known image in the 1930s. The Thunderbird was adopted by the division as its distinctive shoulder insignia in 1939.
