DescriptionArizona National Guard, Fort Huachuca, 1910

Photo most likely shows Arizona Guardsmen assembled at Fort Huachuca in late July to early August, 1910 to compete for qualification to represent the Arizona National Guard at the annual National Rifle Association and national match competition to be held at Camp Perry, Ohio for several weeks in August 1910.

Seated in the front row, fifth from left is Major Carl Hayden (he's wearing cavalry-style gauntlets with his right hand covering his left - he's missing a left finger from a childhood accident). Behind him to the left stands Lieutenant Chris Sigala. Sigala has three expert marksmanship medals pinned to his uniform, displaying his proficiency with firearms. Lt. Sigala was a regimental staff officer at this time and helped to prepare the campsite at Fort Huachuca for this event. He was also a competitor in this qualification round. Aside from Hayden and Sigala, at least five other men in this photo are guardsmen from Tempe's Company C of the 1st Infantry Regiment, Arizona National Guard.

After the completion of this event, approximately 15-20 guardsmen were selected to represent Arizona in the national competion at Camp Perry. Lt. Sigala was one of these men, along with a number of men from Tempe's Company C.
