Structure originally built ca.1888 by rancher Joseph D. Cooper (b.1850 - d.1927) as a saloon. Saloon was intended to serve railroad customers at the new Tempe stop.

Building sold ca.1901 to German Immigrant August E. Berkenkamp (b. 24 Jun 1866 - d. 22 Oct 1942). Berkenkamp operated the grocery store until ca.1911. At that point, the building began use as a residential struture at remained so until it's purchase by the City of Tempe and subsequent demolition in 1986.
