Description2019 City of Tempe Diversity Award winner Tempe Sister Cities, a volunteer 501c3 organizatiion, has embraced diversity since its founding in 1970. Their tagline is, "We are bringing the world together, one friendship at a time." In 1972 they began a student exchange program by sending four high school students to Skopje, Yugoslavia. Today they send 32 students to one of thie 11 sister cities - Skopje, Macedonia; Regensburg, Germany; Lower Hutt, New Zealand; Zhenjiang, China; Beaulieu sur Mer, France; Carlow, Ireland; Cuenca, Ecuador; Cusco, Peru; Trollhattan, Sweden; and Timbuktu, Mali and Agra City, India (students are not sent to the last two cities, however students from those countries are brought to Tempe.) Tempe Sister Cities does fund raisers, such as the Oktoberfest, to purchase all the plane tickets and arrange for host families in the various sister cities. In this way, families of all economic levels can participate. TSC is building Tempe's leaders of tomorrow. The students learn to live with families with very different customs, eating their food, listening to their music and learning different points of view about history. They negotiate airports and translate signs wiritten in different languages. Many of these participants have gone on to join the Peace Corps and take positions of leadership all over the world.
