DescriptionColor photograph of 2018 City of Tempe Diversity Award Educational winner Hablar Para Integrar (HA.P.I). HA.P.I teaches Spanish-speaking Latinos not only how to speak English, but how to integrate into American culture. Approximately 1,200 students are currently enrolled and there is a waiting list. Classes teach students about democracy, how to order food at a restaurant, manners and more. Student families are included in school celebrations. There is even a component of the cirriculum that involves writing to elected leaders, so students learn that they are a part of our Arizona community and important people do care about them. When they finish the program, HA.P.I students are not just English speakers, they are members of a community who believe in contributing and being involved.Status
