Tempe Councilman, 1900-1902.
First congressman from Arizona after it became a state in 1912.
Graduated from the Territorial Normal School, 1896.
Secretary of the C. T. Hayden Co., 1899.
First gained prominence in a heroic pursuit and capture of fugitives who had robbed the
Maricopa and Phoenix Railroad train near Tempe in 1910.
Became a powerful political figure, with unsurpassed 57-year tenure in U.S. Congress. His
most significant accomplishments were in the areas of federal reclamation and irrigation, federal highway legislation, and women's suffrage.
