BiographyMusician; laborer at the Hayden Flour Mill for 40 years.
Arrived in Tempe as a child in 1918.
He attended the Eighth Street School, but dropped out at age 13, and returned to Solomonville to work as a farm laborer. His family returned to Tempe in 1922, when he was 14 years old. He worked for the Arizona Eastern Railway. He and his brother, Ralph, were musicians. They played together professionally for the first time at a wedding reception in 1923. Paul was 14 and Ralph was 9 years old. In 1926, Paul started playing with his father, Pablito, who had a 7-piece orchestra. During the Depression era, he and his father joined the WPA String Orchestra
(c1937-1940). This federal program paid "skilled laborers" $22.50 per week, requiring five hours of practice a day, as well as several public performances. In 1940, Pablito and Paul Chavarria, and Mike and Ben Gamboa formed a group called "Los Rancheritos," which played for baptisms, birthdays, weddings, etc. In 1957, Paul joined a group of musicians from Guadalupe. Mike Lopez was the group leader until they disbanded in 1971.
