As a boy, worked in his grandfather's soda bottling plant.
Received a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Arizona State University.
Taught American government and free enterprise at Tempe High School, 1964-1992.
Best known for his successful efforts to redevelop downtown Tempe and plan construction of the Rio Salado Project. He resigned as mayor in 1994 to run as a candidate for State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
