DescriptionThere was a lot of memory-sharing as longtime and new members of Tempe's First Congregational Church and their guests got together last Sunday to celebrate the church's 85th birthday. Among those sharing memories of the church and Tempe's earlier days were (from left) Francis Fenney, master of ceremonies for the anniversary dinner, and a longtime member of the church; guest speaker Howard Pyle, whose father was a earlier-day minister of another Tempe church, the First Baptist; Mrs. Prior, widow of Rev. Cecil Prior, who was Congregational Church's minister for 21 years; Mrs. Muriel Burkhard; Rev. Russell Mueller, in his fourth year as pastor of the church; and the church's longest-time member, Estelle Hackett, who has held membership since 1909. The dinner was held at the First Methodist Church, to give Congregational Church women a "day off" from cooking and serving chores. See related photo at 2001.19.2021 for additional info.
