Caption from the Tempe 150th Anniversary exhibit:
Sergeant Arizona T. Harris of Tempe – back row, second from right – and the other crew members of B-17 bomber “Sons of Fury.” T/Sgt. Harris became legendary in the Army Air Corps because he continued firing his guns at enemy fighter planes as his stricken bomber hit the water and sank into the Bay of Biscay off France in January 1943. In death, he received a Distinguished Service Cross for his actions that day.
