DescriptionLetter dated Jan. 17, 1900 from Dr. Fenn J Hart, Tempe's first mayor, to his daughter Mildred Muriel Hart in Tempe, AZ. The letter is written on Dr. Hart's private practice stationary at his office in Jerome, Arizona where he opened a private practice upon his return from serving in the Spanish-American and Philippine Wars c. 1900. Dr. Hart affectionately writes to a then 6-year-old Muriel, in apparent response to a letter he received from her feeling forgotten for lack of correspondence from him. Dr. Hart appears to be attempting to comfort Muriel and reassure her of his love, reminding her that he is prospering financially while away, wishing her well from Jerome children and residents that apparently knew and played with Muriel at some point, as well as sad news of the death of a little girl Muriel appears to have inquired about. Dr. Hart goes on to plead with Muriel to be happy riding in her buggy at their Tempe home for the winter, as he was apparently renting a home with narrow rooms and streets in a cold Jerome. Dr. Hart closes the letter with well wishes for Muriel, her mother Rosa Brown Hart, and grandmother Melintha Tyrell Hart (Dr. Hart's mother), who was apparently living with Mrs. Rosa Hart and Muriel at the time.
