Catalog number1987.1.2897
DescriptionView of downtown looking north up Mill Avenue (angle of view toward northwest from high vantage point on east side of street - photographer may have been in the Laird & Dines building). Conspicuous landmarks include the Casa Loma Hotel at 4th Street, the rock formations of Papapgo Park in the background, and Camelback Mountain further beyond.

This photo appeared in the December 25, 1901 addition of the Arizona Republican newspaper. The photo itself appears on p.10, near the bottom left of the page. The edition features a special Tempe history section for Christmas (of which this photo is part). The Tempe section covers p.10-12, and has portions written by the editor/manager of the Tempe office of the Arizona Republican (Frederick C. Wright), the Mayor of Tempe (John Knight), Professor A. J. Matthews of the Territorial Normal School of Tempe ( ASU today ), and W. J. Kingsbury, president of the Tempe Farmers' and Merchants' Bank.

Possible that the photo was taken by Fred Wright or a member of the Arizona Republican newspaper staff in Tempe for use in this story (information with Wright indicates that he prepared the design and illustrations in the story).
