DescriptionThe black and white photograph shows a crowd of people at the Casa Loma Hotel enjoying the celebration of the Tempe Centennial. The photo and an accompanying article were published April 17, 1971 in the Tempe Daily News:MAMA CENTENNIAL FESTIVITIES - Starting Friday afternoon and lasting until early Saturday morning was the festival at Fourth Street and Mill Avenue featuring sidewalk wares, open house of shops, clowns, bands, dancing. Handmade hanging swings of wood and rope were among the many interesting items for sales. Not many residents, other than the longhairs, appear to participate in the festival put on by the Mill Avenue Merchant's Association. Over 2,000 persons were report in the few blocks at the peak of the activity. Sometime during the night, a plate glass window containing the deposit box of First National Bank, corner of Mill and sixth was broken. On left Mill Avenue Boogie Band performing in the hot sun as people sit on curbs, children and dogs included, to watch and listen. On right part of the audience for the music seated on lawn of Casa Loma Hotel, the shadiest spot.
