DescriptionFrom an article/photographs appearing in the Tempe Daily News, June 23, 1978:

In The Good Old Summertime - Summertime was probably one of the busiest times of the year for Tempe's homemakers in the late 1800s and early part of the 20th Century. Summer heat or no, that's when they had to do much of their canning and drying of fruits and vegetables - and among summer chores was the inevitable butter churning. In Tempe Historical Museum "Summer Work" exhibit above are pictured some of the churns used back in the "good old days." That big wooden one at right was for making butter in large quantity. Dating back to 1840s, it boasted a plug you pulled out of bottom to drain off buttermilk before collecting butter from side of churn.
