Caption from the Tempe 150th Anniversary exhibit:
Captain Raymond N. Moraga on the wing of his P-47 Thunderbolt fighter plane. He earned the Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters before being shot down over France on June 10, 1944. During a memorial ceremony at Arizona’s Luke Field the following year, his former commander recalled Capt. Moraga as the “best pilot he had ever flown with” and his chosen “wing man” for combat missions.
