DescriptionPhotograph taken from up on the hiking trails of Tempe Butte, looking out south towards Downtown Tempe. In the foreground, petroglyphs are visible on the rockface at the left of the frame, and the mountain below is in shadow and covered in grasses. Looking out at downtown, Tempe Mission Palms and City Hall are both visible, and the view extends towards ASU Campus. A building in the distance glows brightly, and some mountains are just visible on the horizon.

"Hayden Butte Preserve contains approximately 500 petroglyphs, or rock art images, that were made by the Hohokam between A.D. 750 and 1450...Because of its significant historical and cultural significance, as well as the abundant desert fauna and flora, Tempe designated the landmark as a preserve in 2002. This protects the butte's future while maintaining its connections to the past." - City of Tempe web page
