DescriptionColor photograph of 2018 City of Tempe Diversity Award Individual Youth winner Brian Cerda. Brian Cerda is a senior at Tempe High School, where he is a member of the Stand and Serve Club. The Stand and Serve Club is a positive youth development program committed to preventing violence before it begins. Brian is a peer educator with Stand and Serve, and is trained to educate and empower his peers on issues they are facing, such as relationship violence, bullying and oppression of all forms. He is a compassionate, motivated and strong leader who enjoys being involved in the community. He is a member of Tempe high School's Gay Straight Alliance, where he serves as events coordinator. As a child Brian never really felt like himself; he felt like a boy, though he was raised as a girl. Making the decision to transition from female to male is terrifying on many levels, with fear of acceptance or even harassment and violence. He faces these challenges with strength and flouishes as he has learned to accept himself.
