BiographyWon the first Mr. America title at age of 31 in 1939. Operator of a body conditioning gymnasium in Hollywood, California.
He was a boxer, sprinter, broad jumper, pole vaulter, and played football, basketball and baseball.
He also toured the circus and carnival circuit, doing his difficult hand-balancing act from a 125-foot pole. Eventually drifted to Hollywood and became a stunt man and stood in for such muscular stars as Johnny Weismuller and Buster Crabbe. He leaped off cliffs onto horseback, rode at top speed on a motorccle, and sometimes ended up with broken bones. Between times he took up the sports of motorcycle racing, roller skating, and ice skating.
During World War II, he served with the navy as a physical director.
Lived on First Street in 1910.
