DescriptionFrom a photograph caption appearing in Tempe Daily News, January 1978:Life Saver -
Homeowner Joyce Dennis (center) points to smoke detector at her Tempe home which kept her family from being asphyxiated when vacuum from a furnace drew toxic air rising from fireplace and filtered it throughout the house. The smoke alarm on the home's second floor went off and awakened the family. Tempe Fire Department fire safety specialists Judith Anderson (left) and Shelley Murphy told Mrs. Dennis her smoke alarm would work best if attached to the ceiling but six inches from the ceiling on the wall is "second best" location. The pair of fire safety specialists also caution other Tempeans with fireplaces that when fireplace is in use - be sure to turn off furnace so smoke isn't drawn throughout the house.
