DescriptionFifth grade students at Laird Elementary School and their teacher Mrs. Martha Roberson (back center) gather round Escalante Senior Center members (center left and right) Manuela Pena and Leonar Alvillar for a lesson in tortilla-making. Mrs. Pena, Mrs. Alvillar and other Escalante Senior Citizens Agustin Araiza and Cuquita Romero demonstrated making of flour and corn tortillas for the youngsters as part of a "Yesterday's Jobs -- Today's Pleasures" project in which Laird fifth graders of Mrs. Roberson, Jerry Rosscup and Judith Waddel are being given an opportunity to appreciate and compare occupations and lifestyles of the past with those of the present. Students have also heard longtime Tempe resident Mrs. Kay Windes tell about early-day Arizona and problems then with heating, cooling, transportation and food; and Historical Museum Director Peggy Burton tell about the role of adobe bricks in early construction, before youngsters themselves experienced brick-making with the help of Mr. and Mrs. Ignacio Ramirez and Mrs. Romelia Ramirez.
