DescriptionInterior photographic view of Tempe Monthly Meeting Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), 318 E 15th Street, Tempe. Per Dick George's catalogue notes:
"This room is the site of the central weekly religious gathering at the Tempe Quaker "church," more properly called the "Tempe Monthly Meeting." The walls and ceiling are soft white, clear of decoration and icon alike. The carpet and upholstery are in medium tones, and the lighting bright because of the generous amount of windows.
The effect is austere, consistent with the Quaker belief that such things risk becoming distractions from their main business, that is, a meditative silence in which they attempt soul-searching and a personal conversation with their supreme Being.
The meeting room seats approximately 60. Restless infants and children gather in other rooms for "First Day" (Sunday) School activities while adults meet here in general silence."
