DescriptionTaken from Tempe Daily News - February 21, 1978:Tempe Girl's Club's first "Sweetheart of the Year" award was presented to Ellie Akins (right) during the "Give Your Heart to a Girl" luncheon held on Valentine's Day. Mrs. Akins has worked as a volunteer with the Tempe Girl's Club for several years as a leader, board president and member of the auxiliary. Also receiving a plaque for her outstanding volunteer work with the club during the past year was Heidi Boria (left). Carol Smith, (middle) newly elected President of the Board of Directors presented the two awards. All the cooking for the lunch was done by Carol Swafford and Jean Berry, co-chairmen for the event. Members of Las Noches served the meal.
