DescriptionFrom a photo caption in Tempe Daily News, September 2, 1978:

'Bird Lady' And Friend - Mrs. Joseph T. (Guess) Birchett, who celebrated her 97th birthday in March and has been a Tempe resident since 1903, was the "Bird Lady" to many thousands of Valley youngsters who once traipsed through her garden frequently on tours to see the birds she cared for - and brought wounded flying friends to her for tender loving care. The gentle lady, who was chosen as Tempe's Centennial Queen in 1971, is also well known for her knack with growing things, her paintings and her friendly disposition. That's "Big Boy" at her side. Says Mrs. Birchett, "He's a gentleman; he doesn’t intrude upon anybody."
