DescriptionFrom a photo story appearing in Tempe Daily News, Friday, October 27, 1978:

Couple Celebrates 66th Anniversary - Sunday will be a very special day for Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Vance of Tempe as they celebrate their 66th wedding anniversary.

Mr. Vance, the former Josephine Spilsbury, was born in Colonia Juarez, Chihuahua. Tempe residents nearly all of their 66 years of marriage, the Vance’s were wed October 29, 1912 in the old Mezona recreation center in Mesa - a long-familiar landmark Vance's father helped build.

A native of Mesa, Vance farmed south of Tempe for many years before his retirement. Mrs. Vance was active in Tempe Woman's Club, Tempe Garden Club, and the Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints her for many years and boarded the men who built the Tempe bridge during the early days in our town.

The couple are parents of three sons and one daughter, including Leonard C. Vance and Mrs. Margaret Mills of Tempe and Virgil Vance of LaJolla, California. Their son, Marion, and his wife, Betty, are currently serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Sao Paulo in Brazil, having been there as temple workers for the past two months. The new temple they serve will be dedicated this month and their mission will last two years.

Mr. and Mrs. Vance take a great interest in their family, which includes 20 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren. Mr. Vance enjoys morning rounds of nine holes of golf and takes pleasure in working around their home and year at 942 East Laguna Drive.

The couple is well-known for their baking expertise. Mrs. Vance remembers well baking breads and pastries at three in the morning when she had the Welcome Inn, then located near 8th and Mill. Mr. Vance, who was once a baker for Advance Bakery in Phoenix delights in baking bread for friends who drop in to visit the couple. Their grandchildren are among the few youngsters today who experience the heady moment of biting into a slice of warm homemade bread straight from the oven of their grandparents.

We join the family and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Vance in wishing them a very happy wedding anniversary.
