The son of Lattie Coor, Sr., and Elnora Coor, who were both graduates of Arizona State Teachers College, and educators. He attended Litchfield High. He started studies at Arizona State College in Flagstaff in 1954 as a Phelps Dodge Scholar. Graduated from Northern Arizona University, and got his Master's and doctoral degrees at Washington University in St. Louis. In 1964, he joined the political science faculty at Washington University. He held a series of administrative posts, culminating in his appointment as vice chancellor of Washington University in 1969, when he was 33
years old. He was then President of the University of Vermont, 1976-1989. At age 39 he was the youngest university president in the country in 1976. The University of Vermont awarded him an
honorary doctorate in 1991.
He was sworn in as President of Arizona State University on 15 Mar 1990, at an annual salary of $144,500 plus deferred compensation. He had been offered a salary of $155,000, but volunteered to take a lower figure after studying the current
fiscal sitation of the state and university.
